A GUIDE TO MAKING A GREAT STEAK
For the inexperienced cook, making a good, mouth licking homemade steak can be challenging. Ruining it by overcooking or undercooking it could be very embarrassing. However, you can learn how to make a great one at home rather than spending money having one at a restaurant. This is all you need to know.
Since every cut of steak is different from the other, you need to understand the different cuts available and their traits in order to know how to cook them the right way. To avoid overcooking, undercooking or cooking it the wrong way all together, it is good that you know the various cuts. Fat distribution in the cut is the best way to judge which cut to pick.
Identify your method of cooking. Do you want to grill or broil? For steak, you can cook in any way; but for cuts, it is good to distinguish the different methods of cooking to use one that suits you. Whether you grill on an open flame or on a pan all depends on the type of cut you have. To achieve a perfectly cooked steak, it is important to allow it to come to room temperature before you cook it. 30 to 60 minutes before cooking your steak, remove it from the refrigerator.
For the best results in preparing a great steak, it is advisable to remove it from the refrigerator some 30 minutes or so before you can start cooking it. This gives it time to come to room temperature before you can start cooking it on the oven or pan.
For a delicious, well flavored, finger licking steak, it is advisable to avoid unnecessary moving or poking of your steak. This is only a sure way of destroying the texture and flavor of your steak. Only turn the steak when need be, because steak tends to maintain a natural flavor if it remains undisturbed during cooking.
Depending on the thickness of the steak, temperature and time vary. In order to know whether your steak is cooked and ready, gently press your finger into the centre of the steak, and see if it bounces back. In case it does not bounce back, then it means it is not yet cooked. When you press and discover that your steak is firm, know that it is ready. Avoid cutting it immediately you remove it from the grill or pan, as this allows for loss of flavor in form of juices. Give it ten minutes to cool.
